James has painted and drawn as his full time occupation since college. His work has developed over that time, with his practice solely being painting and preparatory drawing.
James studied drawing at L’Ecole Superieur des Beaux Arts, Paris (Studio Pierre Matthey), foundation at Great Yarmouth College of Art and Design, and painting at Manchester Polytechnic. He now works from his studio in Norfolk.
The Palazzo Foundation presents its inaugural solo exhibition ‘Life in Transit’ in May at the Villa Delle Peschiere, Genoa - featuring James Hawke.
Titled ‘Life in Transit’, this exhibition features James Hawke, whose interpretations of idealism and domestic life offer a fresh lens through which to view Genoa’s history and cultural heritage. At its core, Life in Transit reflects the significance of transit—not merely as the physical movement of people, but as the flow of trade, ideas, culture, and artistic expressions.
