Part of the reason for this is that it reflectsthe world around us, which presents so many more than this. Whether I’m working with a muted or bright palette, the number of colours I try to represent doesn’t really change, although it may appear so. Alongside Poolside, I have always painted British landscapes, a practice that has made me look very hard at the differentiation between colours (all that green!). The flatness of my colour is also deliberate. As much as possible, I remove texture from this series of paintings because in art it is an expression of emotion. My paintings are not about me; it is about the people in them. It is also about presenting a factual scenario, although the choice of a dark palette can turn what on the surface appears to be a happy holiday scene into an intriguingly mysterious one.
