This painting uses contrast throughout. The hot palette deliberately creates high contrasts of colour as well as tone. I have previously painted this scene as a wider composition but was drawn to this corner by the dynamic movement of the people on the shoreline. This creates a contrast between the supine energy of the sunbathers and the dynamism we always experience at the water's edge.
